How to present clearly: 7 tips
A clear presentation combines one central message, a steady speaking pace, audible pauses, and focused slides. Rehearse under realistic conditions and evaluate only a few characteristics at a time.
1. One key message per section
Decide what the audience should retain from each section. Anything that does not support that point can be shortened.
2. Make speaking pace visible
Stress makes many speakers accelerate without noticing. Measure a rehearsal in words per minute and set a personal upper limit. Read the speaking pace guide for details.
3. Plan pauses as part of the talk
A short pause after an important statement gives the audience time to process it. Mark these moments in your notes.
4. Reduce your slides
A slide should support your explanation, not deliver a second talk at the same time. Use large labels and only information relevant in that moment.
5. Say your transitions
Explain why the next section follows. A sentence such as “This has two consequences” provides orientation and naturally slows you down.
6. Rehearse realistically
Stand up, share your slides, and use the same microphone planned for the event. Measure total duration, but also inspect individual dense sections.
7. Request targeted feedback
Do not ask test listeners for a general rating. Ask: Was the pace comfortable? Which statement stayed with you? Where was context missing?
