Speaking too fast in presentations: a practical rehearsal routine

If you speak too fast during presentations, rehearse your actual material, choose a personal pace limit and pause after key ideas. Live feedback can show you when your pace rises while you are still speaking.

How do I know if I am speaking too fast?

A high WPM reading alone does not tell you whether your talk is clear. Notice questions, audience reactions and feedback from someone unfamiliar with your topic. Ask them to explain your main point in their own words. If important connections are missing, try shorter sentences and more time between ideas.

Why do I speed up during a talk?

You may be trying to fit too much material into too little time, working with an unclear structure or rushing through a difficult section. During rehearsal, notice which passages make your pace rise. Cut material before trying to deliver every sentence faster. WordPace measures pace; you need to interpret the cause in the context of your talk.

A rehearsal routine for your next presentation

Choose a short passage from your real talk. Present it at your normal pace and ask a listener which idea came across. Measure your pace in a second run. Set a personal upper limit based on a run the listener found clear. Pause after each key point and repeat the passage. Compare understanding and pace before adjusting the limit again.

Why pauses and speaking pace are different

A pause gives your audience time to process an idea. It does not automatically change how quickly you speak within a sentence. WordPace excludes pauses from actual speaking time, so a pause does not simply push the reading artificially down. Practise both calmer sentences and meaningful pauses: the number describes only part of your presentation.

What should I do when the warning appears?

Finish your thought, take a deliberate pause and begin the next sentence more calmly. Avoid trying to control every number during a talk. The warning reminds you of your own limit. If it appears constantly, review whether your content is too dense or your chosen limit is unsuitable for the situation.

Measure speaking pace live with WordPace

WordPace is an iPhone and Mac app. Choose an available presentation language, allow microphone access and start a session. See your pace in words per minute. A red warning appears above your personal limit; iPhone can add a haptic alert. After a sufficiently long session, the recap shows average, peak, warnings and timeline. The recap disappears when closed.

Privacy and preparation before a talk

WordPace stores neither audio recordings nor transcripts. Recognition runs on your device. Before the first use of a language, a speech model may need downloading. Prepare your language before your talk; once ready, it can work offline. WordPace requires iOS 26 or macOS 26 and is a one-time purchase without a subscription. The App Store shows the current price for your country.
